A Trip For Graham’s Birthday

Last weekend I took a trip to Nottingham to help Graham celebrate his 50th birthday in style!

We tented a house to base ourselves at for the weekend and myself and Graham travelled down on Friday, meeting up with his Chris and their other brother Dave and on Saturday we were joined by our mate Rob.

We had hoped that Richie and Gareth would be able to join us, but the stars did not align for that.

We had planned to do Warhammer World all weekend, but we didn’t realise the weekend was the 40k GT, and thus we couldn’t book a table for Saturday, only Sunday.

So on Saturday we went to Boards and Swords in Derby and we played a 9000 point game, me and Graham with my Word Bearers and how World Eaters and Solar Auxilia against Dave, Chris and Rob who had a force of Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Custodes between them.

I took the Mastodon, which to form, did not last past turn 2 and most of the Terminators it carried were killed, and Lorgar came along to summon Deamons.

But me and Graham had our arses handed to us as my dice rolling was atrocious, I just kept on rolling 1s like John Dermondy!

At one point when I rolled a pair of 1s then rerolled them to get the same result again when I needed just a single 2+, Graham just looked at me and said:-

Why do I fucking bother

He was right, my game was horrific, but somehow we managed to draw!

That night we had curry did some recording and I attempted to play Blackstone Fortress but I was knackered and couldn’t concentrate to I gave up and went to bed.

The next day we went to Warhammer world and played a 5000 points a side game, it went mostly the same way, but this time the loyalists knew our strengths better and hit them hard.

Lorgar was taken with Divination instead of Deamonology, and turned out to be pretty darn good, and almost killed Sanguinius, but alas he fell.

Interestingly we had a good time figuring out if Lorgar could take Deamonology, turns out the rule that says he can is in the generic Librarian rules and not in his rules!

It’s gonna be just over six weeks until I see all the guys again, apart from Dave who I won’t see until September. I like these guys, they are my closest friends and spending time with them is a real treat.

Thanks Graham for an amazing weekend of fun!

What I Am Modelling

The hands have been an issue this week so painting hasn’t been happening as much as would have liked, so I have been content to model instead.

I have this week built a Predator, Mourngal, 40 Chainrasps, 12 Myrmourn Banshees, 10 Ultramarines Seekers, 10 Death Guard Heavy Support Marines and some Easy to Build Sequitors.

I managed to get all of those primed and ready to hit the table along with some nurglings.

I spent the week slowly painting up the squad of Blood Ravens Reivers, and as many of you will know I really dislike painting Reivers and Phobos Amour in general, and to get all of the Phobos Armour out of the way, I also painted my Captain in Phobos Armour too.

I managed to get those finished on Friday afternoon.

I also did a bit of a speed painting job on some Nurglings, painted the all with Contrast and I am pretty happy with how these turned out.

And then I started work on The Three Hunters and finished off Legolas and Aragorn, but my photo of Aragorn is at a terrible angle so I will share his photo next week.

Just have Gimli to go of those now.

My painting plan is in a little disarray at the minute due to the hands, so I have rejigged it a little, I may have to delay some of the Death a Korps as I need paint and I am out of money to buy any just now.

  1. Death Korps of Krieg Centaur Crew x 2
  2. Death Guard Heavy Support Squad with Autocannons x 10
  3. Blood Ravens Bikes x 3 and Attack Bike with Heavy Bolter
  4. Death Korps of Krieg Quartermaster and Retinue and Ridemaster
  5. Forge World Plague Marines x 10
  6. Chainrasp Horde x 40
  7. Death Korps of Krieg Command Squad Men with Special Weapons
  8. Blood Ravens Captains x 5
  9. Warcry Terrain
  10. Myrmourn Banshees x 12

I have decided to do the Chainrasps in batches of 40, I have a scheme is think will work quite well for them and help get them done fast.

I really want to keep in top of the Nighthaunt as they arrive with Mortal Realms.

What I Am Reading

I read a little of Celestine The Living Saint but haven’t picked it up since Saturday night 🙁

I have been listening to a number of audio dramas however, making my way through most of the 1 hour and less ones put out in recent years that I haven’t listened to. This week I have listened to :-

So quite a bit got listened to!

What I Am Playing

I played the two games of Horus Heresy with Graham and the lads, but we also played a game of Cards Against Humanity, it’s not my favourite game, but it can be fun with the right crowd.

What I Am Backing

We have backed The Rival Networks, we are big fans of the original game and backing this was a no brainier for us.

I am also still backing Justice Blocks, but that isn’t going to fund.

And the Rising Sun soundtrack arrived last night, but I haven’t listened to it yet.

What I Am Cooking

Made a pot noodle!

What I Am Spending

I spent a bit more than I wanted to this week. I bought a Predator for my Heresy Death Guard and Mortarion for my 40k Death Guard.

I also bought a new Army Painter drybrush, a can of Grey Seer and a few paints that I needed.

A Trip To Warhammer World

This past Thursday and Friday, myself and Megan made a trip to Warhammer World, whilst Lindsay went to work at her office behind it.

On a Thursday we settled in Bugmans Bar and played a few board games.

We started off with Combat Arena, which Megan convincingly won, I mean I didn’t stand a chance in it.

The we played Lost Patrol, switching sides between games, but needless to say the Scouts won neither game!

We then had lunch, but instead of playing Underworlds as planned we left and did the Hall of Minis which is always great, but the reason we did it early was because of an idiot making rape jokes on the table next to ours.

Sadly he was with a rather well know person in the hobby with a significant following so I am not naming him because I don’t need the blow back, but it’s sad to see that someone like that turns out to be an arse.

Anyway we had a great time in the hall of minis and then we finished off the day with a few games of Combat Cards back in Bugmans.

On Friday we had planned to play a 2000 point game of Death Guard vs Blood Angels, but Megan got a migraine so we couldn’t continue past turn two.

And thus we ended up spending the rest of the day in Bugmans.

Quite upset by that as I had been looking forward to this game for months, but she can’t help it.

We do plan to try playing the game again at Battle Bunker on Wednesday however.

What I am Modelling

I had a bit of a productive run before I headed off the Warhammer World, specifically I finished the last two characters from Combat Arena, Daedalosus and Aradia Madellan.

I also got my Army of the Dead for Middle Earth painted up, but the scheme was super simple, it was primed in Grey Seer, washed with Hexwraith Flame, metal was picked out with Coelia Greenshade and then a dry brush of Gauss Blaster Green.

But it works and I am rather happy with how they look.

Building wise I built the first of my Javelin Attack Speeders, which is so far a rather nice model to work with.

I have started work on some Custodes and hope to have these finished tomorrow.

What I am Reading

I started the week by reading the short story Down Amongst The Dead Men by Steve Lyons, which was ok, but I didn’t think that there was much payoff for the protagonist and the ending felt disconnected from the rest of the story.

I then read Left for Dead by Steve Lyons which was pretty good, an interesting look at the mind of a Death Korpsman, and I followed this up with The Strong Among Us, which was actually really enjoyable and a good look at how neither side in the 40k universe could be considered good guys.

And in my excitement about the Adepta Sororitas I am reading some stories about them, and I started off with Whispers by Alec Worley, which is really good and then I am about halfway through The Flesh Tithe by Miles A Drake and that’s so far pretty good, between these and a novel I read the other week, I may end up ordering some Necron Flayed Ones to paint.

What I am Playing

On Tuesday night we played a game of Mysterium at Megan’s parents, I was the ghost and sadly we lost, because I am rubbish at giving good clues.

What I am Backing

Nowt right now, but I will he backing Car Wars Sixth Editon in some form.

What I am Cooking

Again nowt, I simply am not capable right now 🙁

What I am Spending

I made one big purchase, the Sisters of Battle box, I managed to get my copy at 9:58 on Saturday morning, needless to say I am very happy with this.

    Mood: Down
    Caffeinated Beverages Consumed: 2
Current State of Projects: Custodes 75% done

Planning A Trip To Warhammer World

Lindsay’s office is in Nottingham, right behind Warhammer World, and she is not afraid to tell you that working alone at home has some mental health implications.

Earlier this year I gave up my having my own studio room to move downstairs to share what is now the office with Lindsay. There were two reasons for this, firstly it means that the room that used to be my studio is now a spare room for when nephews and nieces want to stay over. And secondly it means that most days for a good part of the day, Lindsay has an office mate in the form of me and sometimes Megan.

But one thing we agreed upon, was that at least once every six months, we would go to Nottingham so that Lindsay could have a couple of days working at her office with people, and me and Megan would go to Warhammer World and play.

Sounds like Lindsay is getting a raw deal, but going to the office does a lot for her mental health and really give her a boost, this year we have been bad and there was too long a gap since our last visit, but this next year we will be better.

We get there Thursday the 14th November, we go that day because Lindsay has a late start, so we get kicked out just before Warhammer World opens and me and Megan will be playing small games, so Combat Arena or Gorechosen, Gretchinz, Lost Patrol, Combat Cards, Kill Team, Underworld etc.

And then on Friday, when we will be getting an Uber over, we are going to play a game of 40k, Megan is gonna take her Blood Angels for which I have challenged us to paint a couple of new units at least, and I will be taking Death Guard, for which I need to paint a bit too.

And then we shall take a slow journey back up on the Saturday. We have a favourite Travelodge, I mean there aren’t many hotels in our price range in Nottingham that can sleep three people in one room, and there is a nice little pub next door that serves a decent breakfast, so we should be ok for that.

So what I need to do after Company of Legends, is prioritise my painting a bit better, I want to get Nikis Death Korps all done by Christmas and I want to paint up a lot of my Death Guard, so I am gonna have to make a good plan to do it all.

What I am Modelling

Scenery was the big thing for most of the end of last week, I painted, with Megan’s help, a second Bastion for Scottish Graham’s box of scenery.

Then I did a few little bits of scatter terrain, some Promthium Barrels, Ammo Crates etc.

This was followed by the last part of Scottish Graham’s terrain, a Sacristan Forgeshrine.

And my final piece of terrain for the week, a final Haemotrope Reactor, this one was for my box of scenery from Conquest and I used some Grey Knights Steel and in general did a bit more with this piece.

I then started work on my characters for Combat Arena, starting with Neyam Shai Murad and Gotfret de Montbard.

My plan with the rest of the week is to finish the Combat Arena fighters and do some work on Sector Slytherin.

What I am Reading

I have been managing to do a little Reading each night, the reading goals on iOS 13 are surprisingly encouraging.

I finished Farsight, and then read Fire and Ice by Peter Fehervai and swiftly moved on to Aun’Shi by Braden Campbell.

All of which I really enjoyed and to get more T’au goodness I have purchased the T’au Empire Legends of the Dark Millennium book, it contains stories I have already read, but the rest I don’t own at all so it’s good.

But because I was no where near my bank card and Black Library still doesn’t take PayPal, I instead started on The Bone Desert by Robbie MacNiven in preparation for the new Gotrek stuff coming out this weekend.

What I am Playing

I have to played anything this week sadly, but I aim to change that in the next couple of days.

What I am Backing

Nothing new, and haven’t had anything arrive this week.

What I am Cooking

Still having trouble with making anything beyond a microwave meal, seriously sad that I haven’t been capable of cooking anything for over a month now.

What I am Spending

I was quite lucky and won an eBay auction for the Horus Heresy Age of Darkness rulebook for £15 and it’s still sealed in its box.

I did place a small Forge World Order, I got some paint that I had ran out of or had dried up, and the Reaver Titan Warp Missile Rack, and Warlord Titan Macro Gattling Blaster for Adeptus Titanicus.

I also put in money towards getting a Now TV stick for Lindsay’s grandad, we are changing to Sky Q and he has been “borrowing” our multiroom box for a number of years now so he can enjoy the sports, and that’s coming to an end, so we have dropped sports from our package and are subscribing to it on Now TV for him.

Open Day Report and Project Tingler

Last Saturday me and Lindsay headed off to Nottingham for the Warhammer 40,000 Open Day, and it was an awesome day.

We arrived a little late so we missed the lines to get in, we also missed being able to park in the car park. But once we arrived we were able to get our passes and move straight into the building very smoothly. Lindsay wasn’t quite amazed it was her third visit in less than a year, but I am still awed every time I go.

Anyway, it was first time since they removed the Special Exhibition area and expanded the Warhammer store into that, moved the Black Library store and expanded the Forgeworld store, the changes were nice to see and it has given a lot more area to display product and give a better shopping experience.

I was able to take Lindsay into the Exhibition Centre for the first time and she was pretty blown away. She found herself once again tempted to look into taking up Age of Sigmar as the models of the Ironjawz and Sylvaneth tempted her, especially Alarielle the Everqueen.

The exhibitions themselves had changed quite a bit from my last visit a year ago which was nice to see, I was especially impressed by the Ironwarp Citadel.

In the main hall they had the Kill Team tournament going on, I would have entered but that would have been unfair on Lindsay as it would have meant me leaving her alone for such a long time, so the Millitarium Tempestus did not get to storm up in their Taurox sadly. They also had the special sales area, but by the time we got there, they had sold out of Custodes Grav Tanks, not that I was interested in one!

In Bugmans it was heaving and at lunchtime, me and Lindsay were very lucky to get a table. Whilst I was in the line to order food the chap in front of me didn’t have a table and couldn’t order food without one, so I let him join us. Turned out to be a lovely young man named Michael who was a student at Sheffield. Now shock horror the menu at Bugmans has changed, they have massively reduced the options to mostly burgers and pizzas which is a shame, no more Fat Bloke which is just sad.

That said I did enjoy the Bugmans Burger and Lindsay enjoyed her Custodes Special Burger.

In the studio area (the GW staff canteen) they had some really cool stuff on display, including the painted up mini of the Magnus daemon primarch model, and an unpainted version, and I gotta say it’s a really really nice model. Might have to get one just to build and paint. The sprues for it were also on display, showing that it has the option of another weapon and three different heads.

There was also a diorama in progress of the burning of Prospero which looks simply amazing, it has some great stuff on there including Feki and Geri, Russ’s wolf companions and their models are brilliant. They also had on display the new shield and gladius upgrade packs for the Ultramarines which I am desperately waiting for, a Custodes Grav Speeder, a Custodes Contemptor and the phenomenally large Imperial Knight Porphyrion.

I also got to have abbot of a chat with Alan Bligh about the rules for the Thousand Sons and Space Wolves that are coming up in Book 7, he didn’t give away a lot, but what he did gives me a lot of hope that these two legions will get the treatment they deserve.

It was a thoroughly wonderful day, wish I had won the £500 trolley dash in the raffle but alas I did not, but I loved my day and am seriously considering going to the New Year Open Day as well.

What I am Modelling

Quite a bit actually, I finished off the three Stormcast Eternal Liberators from Storm of Sigmar, I painted up a scout squad from Lost Patrol, I completed my Word Bearers Chaplain with a jump pack and got the Scourge starter fleet for Dropfleet Commander painted up.

So that took quite a bit off my to do list, I also based the Word Bearers Contemptor Dreadnought that I painted up a while ago.

I have built a squad of MKIII veterans for the Word Bearers and painted up the Sht for that squad as a test model for the line troops who will be mostly drybrushed and I am quite happy with that. And tonight I got some MKIII breachers out of the WIP box and am looking to get them finished ASAP.

What I am Reading

A lot of news and analysis, it’s almost like something important has been going on in the world!

I literally just put down issues 0 and 1 of Warhammer 40,000 Will of Iron a comic written by my friend George Mann, and I have really enjoyed that. It always nice to see the Dark Angels and the Inquisitor seems like an interesting character.

What I am Playing

Not a sausage sadly, I have only really been able to play on the iPad, and I have mostly confined myself to Ticket to Ride using the Nordic map, a map I really love and enjoy, and well it’s wintery and it matches the weather.

What I am Backing

Something a little unconventional, I am backing Project Tingler a FMV game by Zöe Quinn (I don’t care what you think of her politics, I actually rather liked Depression Quest and think the campaign of harassment against her was childish and ridiculous) and Chuck Tingle.

Now Chuck Tingle is an amazing man, he is a high functioning autistic savant who suffers from schizophrenia, and he writes the most absurd gay erotica. Now generally speaking gay erotica is not my thing, but there is a certain something about a Tingler that just makes me laugh.

He first came to my attention in an Observer interview in 2015, but he was really propelled into my thoughts when he was nominated for a Hugo Award for “Space Raptor Butt Invasion”. His nomination was a result of a joke inclusion on the slate of the awful alt-right groups who have spent the past few years trying to hijack the Hugo’s, known as the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies. Now I absolutely deplore these groups, they make a business of telling us Sci-Fi fans that all we want is shoot-em-up action adventures with male white protagonists, and absolutely zero diversity or social commentary.

Now I admit I like my bolter porn, but I also love a nice hard hitting bit of Sci-Fi that challenges things in society or makes me think about social change, I mean most of us Sci-Fi fans love Star Trek and that’s as political and progressive as it comes!

Anyway the slate that the puppies put forward is filled with straight white guys and prank candidates, the aim to eliminate nominations for minorities, women and anyone not straight and where they can’t fill a category to see that they aren’t awarded in a good way at all.

And sadly the puppies do succeed in getting their skates largely nominated, including some nominations for their leader, the vile and repulsive Vox Day. Some of the candidates they nominated withdrew to allow other more worthy candidates to fill their spot, but not Chuck Tingle, he said screw you and trolled back in the greatest way possible.

Now Chucks books are simply astounding and they range from “Glazed by the Gay Living Doughnuts” to “Bigfoot Pirates Haunt my Balls” and my favourite “Pounded by the Pound: Turned Gay by the Socioeconomic Implications of Britain Leaving the European Union”!!!

Anyway Chuck registered the website therabidpuppies.com and put out the following statement:-

“Hello my name is Chuck Tingle (worlds greatest author). Sometimes devilmen are so busy planning scoundrel attacks they forget to REGISTER important website names. this is… good because it makes it easy for BUDS WHO KNOW LOVE IS REAL to prove love (all). please understand this is website [sic] to take DARK MAGIC and replace with REAL LOVE for all who kiss the sky.”

The site collected donations for the Crash Override Network, an organisation that works with victims of online trolls like the Puppies, and also included an awesome plug for Chucks local library.

Anyway in the long run, Chuck did not win his Hugo, but there is a small and growing campaign to get him nominated for best related work for his masterpiece “Pounded in the Butt by my Hugo Award Loss”, but he handled the situation so well, he was able to stand up to the nasty alt-right bullies and beat them at their own game. And since then, you could say I have become a True Buckaroo!

I know that Project Tingler will not be in everyone’s taste, but I think it’s worth a look, and given how the world finds itself today with a Donald Trump presidency, perhaps we ought to show that love will always trump hate, so go on, throw a couple of Dollars into a worthy project and help bring the Tingleverse to the computer.

What I am Spending

Spent a little bit too much at the open day, bought myself the Warhammer World exclusive Imperial Knight head, I like its Cylon look, got a Landraider Proteus for my Breachers, a Blood Angels transfer sheet, a Blood Angels t-shirt, the Warhammer World exclusive Errant-Questor for my Stormcast Eternals, some Ultramarine MKIV shoulder pads, praetorian torsos and head and a pot of Dorn Yellow Edge paint.
