Painting My Death Korps of Krieg

I have been asked a couple of times how I paint my Death Korps of Krieg and considering a certain release coming out this Saturday, I figured I would share it.

And if you want to help me and the podcast out, use this link to purchase from Element Games and links to any products will be affiliate links.

I developed the scheme to be different from the army that I painted for Niki, which were very traditionally Krieg with blue French style uniforms.

These are my 510th Siege Regiment, and their uniform is a dark green greatcoat, grey trousers, dark green helmets and tan leather.

Their weapons also have wooden casings as I feel like they would want to ensure their equipment is manufactured as easily and as cheaply as possible.

Anyway let’s crack on, with a squad of Firing Infantry.

We start by priming all the models with black, in this instance I used Wilkos Satin Black.

All the paints I am using are all Citadel, apart from two Vallejo colours.

Step One

The first step is just getting on the base coats which are as follows.

Step Two

The second step is super simple, an all over wash of Agrax Earthshade.

Step Three

The third step is to tidy up the great coat by relayering Death Korps Drab, leaving the Agrax Earthsade in the deepest recesses.

And then do the same to the helmets with German Camo Dark Green.

Step Four

The last step is just some highlights.

And That’s It

It’s a super simple scheme, not a lot to it and it looks nice on the table, dirty and subdued, just like the Death Korps of Krieg.

I like to combo it up with a muddy and wet basing scheme, which is more or less the same scheme as Duncan Rhodes has demonstrated on his website and I think it looks really nice.

If I were to start over, the helmets would be black as the German Dark Camo Green is influenced by the Heer helmets, which is something I was trying to avoid.

I know I am not the worlds best painter, I paint for fun and to a tabletop standard, but I am really proud of these and I enjoy painting them.

Here is the squad that I completed today.

Anyway, I can’t wait to try this out on the new plastic models and will be ordering the new Kill Team box.

Lockdown Hobby Goals

A few weeks ago Games Workshop put up a series of 10 hobby goals for people to try and hit whilst on lockdown and I have decided to try and give them a go.

The ones in bold I have achieved thus far.

  • Take a picture of your latest painted model and post it online with #WarhammerCommunity
  • Complete the scenic bases for your army
  • Build and paint a Monster
  • Build and paint a Kill Team
  • Listen to a whole Warhammer audiobook while painting
  • Build and paint a Warcry Warband
  • Take a picture of your hobby area and post it on Twitter with #WarhammerCommunity
  • Teach someone new to paint a model!
  • Read a Black Library novel
  • Build and paint a new piece of terrain

They are mostly pretty good and I think I can get most of these done, the only one I am not sure it is painting a Monster, I do have Mortarion to do for Everchosen, just got to fit him into the schedule.

Obviously I have a few times now shared my latest models with #WarhammerCommunity, I don’t have many scenic bases for my armies, but all the ones I have right now for the Nighthaunt are completed.

I just finished listening to Beastgrave whilst painting (more on that below) and I have built and painted two Warcry Warbands, a Stormcast Eternals Vanguard Chamber one and the Untamed Beasts.

And a few weeks ago I did all of my Age of Sigmar terrain so that fulfilled that criteria.

So that’s five down and five to do, and I will be getting the Kill Team done in the next week I think.

What I Am Painting

I started the week off by painting the pair of Tech-Priest Manipulus’s I got when the Theta-7 Acquisitus box was released back in January last year and they have been sitting in my desk every since.

Been a while since I did any Adeptus Mechanicus but these were fairly fun to paint, although I think some subassemblies would have worked better for them.

These will see service in both my Adeptus Mechanicus army for 40k and my Mechanicum army in 30k.

Whilst various washes were drying on these I started and finished an Easy to Build Redemptor Dreadnought that I got from Warhammer 40,000 Conquest, but I decided to give this model to the Space Wolves.

Been a while since I touched my Space Wolves but I am thinking of going back and doing some work on them to bring them into 8th Edition.

I have already kitbashed together 4 Grey Hunters Pack Leaders, as last edition you could replace these with Wolf Guard Pack Leaders, which I always did, but now you need them in 8th.

I also built from various parts I had, 15 Blood Claws as that’s a unit I don’t really have in my Space Wolves.

I then started work on the Celestar Balista and Lord Ordinator for the Stormcast Eternals, these were one Balista from Soul Wars and an Easy To Build one from Warhammer Mortal Realms.

A few bits for my Stormcast a Eternals were finished tonight. A Lord-Ordinator and two Celestar Ballista with thier Sacrosanct Engineers, one from Soul Wars I got off @ebay_uk when the box set was first realised and an Easy to Build one I got from Warhammer Mortal Realms. #Warmongers #WarhammerCommunity #PaintingWarhammer2020 #IsolationHobby #PaintingWarhammer #PaintingGamesWorkshop #WarhammerAgeOfSigmar #AoS #WarhammerAoS #AgeOfSigmar #GrandAllianceOrder #StormcastEternals #CelestialVindicators #SacrosanctChamber #LordOrdinator #LordOrdinatorVorrusStarstrike #VorrusStarstrike #CelestarBallista #EasyToBuildCelestarBallista #MortalRealms #WarhammerMortalRealms #Painthammer2020 @jewelknightjess

I finished the first Celestar Balista on the Sunday, the other was finished apart from the base and then concentrated on the Sacristan Engineers and the Lord Ordinator.

I did a big burst of painting until 2am to get them finished. It’s been a long time since I got in the zone like that, and it was actually nice, I had Jack Ryan in in the background and I just painted, and before I knew it, all the models were done and I had binged all of season 2!

Next up on the painting table is some Blightlord Terminators and a Tallyman for the Death Guard.

I have decided to paint both the Deloris Strain and the Blightlord Terminators I made from the old version of the Chaos Terminators and the Forge World upgrade kit at the same time.

So let’s take a look at my painting queue.

  1. Blightlord Terminators x 10 & Tallyman
  2. Chaotic Beasts x 12
  3. Dreadblade Harrows x 2
  4. Blood Ravens Scouts x 10
  5. Millitarium Tempestus Meltagun Squad x 10 & Taurox Prime
  6. Blood Ravens Landspeeders x 3
  7. Stormcast Eternals Prosecutor x 3 and Knight-Venator
  8. Blood Ravens Intercessors x 5 & Sgt Jovan
  9. Stormcast Eternals Retributors x 5 & Knight-Vexillor
  10. Space Wolves Grey Hunters Pack Leaders x 4 & Iron Priest

What I Am Reasing

I started with an audiobook, I listened to Beastgrave which was a very good listen, different to what I was expecting by most enjoyable. The ending was a bit anticlimactic but other than that I loved it.

What I Am Playing

On Sunday we played a couple of games I’d Codenames Pictures. In one I was the spymaster for both players and Lindsay won, and in the second Megan was the spymaster for me and Lindsay and I won.

What I Am Backing

I convinced the girls and we are now backing Lords of Vegas at a level to get us the base game and both expansions.

I have been after this game for some time and it keeps being out of print whenever I am looking, so I am very happy to be backing this.

What Am I Cooking

I have cooked anything at all since my last blog post.

What Am I Spending

Not much spent but I did get my first resupply of paints from Games Workshop since they reopened and it was very much needed.

A can of Grey Seer, pots of Grey Seer, Rakarth Flesh, Kabalite Green, Gryph-Charger Grey and Valhallan Blizzard and two paint brushes, an M Layer and S Layer.

Hobby Resolutions – January Update

Today is the end of January and I am away so won’t be painting anything else so it’s time to give you an update on where I am at in regards to my hobby resolutions.

Paint 867 Models – 12.47% Complete

This one is coming along really nicely, I have thus far painted 108 models so I am well ahead of schedule.

Finish the Blood Ravens that I own on 1st January – 15.79% Complete

For this one, I have painted this month the Supressors and Infiltrators from Shadowspear, that means I have done 6 of the 38 units I have to paint this year, so I am currently on schedule for this, although 4 of the units were only single models.

Finish the Death Guard – 62.5% Complete

As of now I am well ahead on this one, this month I painted a Plagueburst Crawler, two Rhinos, Plague Marines from the multipart kit and a Plague Marine Champion.

However I can’t rest on my laurels for this one because Conquest will be adding Chaos Spawn and a Tallyman so I expect the numbers to change next month, but that will be all I plan to collect for the Death Guard for now, ideally I want this one complete by end of March so I can crack on with other stuff.

Other Resolutions

  • Paint Mortarion for Everchosen
  • Complete 1750 Points of T’au Empire
  • Complete 1750 Points of Orks
  • Complete 2000 Points of Stormcast Eternals
  • Rebase Blood Ravens Tacticals
  • Rebase Orks

None of these have been touched yet, but once I have cleared the Death Guard I can concentrate on other stuff, probably gonna focus on the Stormcast Eternals after that to be honest.

So here is a reminder of my current painting plan that’s changed a little bit since my last post but only because I need to stock up on a couple of paints!

  1. Blood Ravens Primaris Reivers x 10
  2. Death Korps of Krieg Centaur Crew and Grenidiers Soecial Weapons Men
  3. The Three Hunters
  4. Death Guard Heavy Support Squad with Autocannons x 10
  5. Death a Korps of Krieg Quartermaster and Retinue
  6. Blood Ravens Bikes x 3 and Attack Bike with Heavy Bolter
  7. Plague Marines x 10
  8. Death Korps of Krieg Command Squad Soecial Weapons Men x 10
  9. Chainrasp Horde x 20
  10. Blood Ravens Captain x 6

Painting Plan For The Next Couple of Weeks

I am being strict with myself when it comes to painting so I am sharing my plans to give me motivation to stick to them.

I had been considering making this a Google Docs file and share it with my hobby friends, but I think I am more likely to update this blog more often.

I have a few projects I am working for some friends, I am not a commission painter, I am not good enough to do that, I don’t work quickly enough to do it, and more importantly, I do this for fun, not for profit and if I made money off it, I wouldn’t find it fun anymore.

  1. Acastus Knight Porphyrions for Adeptus Titanicus
  2. Secret Project
  3. Ghazghull Thraka
  4. Death Riders of Krieg
  5. Tempestus Scions and Taurox Prime
  6. Lords of Contagion from Dark Imperium
  7. Death Korps of Krieg Infantry Squad
  8. Poxwalkers from Dark Imperium

So a few thinks for Niki and one for Alexander and another for a friend who has asked me to keep it secret, but its just one figure and won’t take too long to paint up. I want to get the first phase of the Death Korps of Krieg done by Christmas, after the Death Riders and Infantry Squad are a Quartermaster, two more squads of Infantry and three Commissars.

The Knights have been stuck on my desk for a few weeks, but I just keep putting them off, probably because its not likely that I will actually play with them much given the controversy about their rules.

The Tempestus Scions are for an army idea that I have had for a long time but has been kind of difficult to do until now. The idea is lead by an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor leading a force of Millitarium Tempestus with a small contingent of Adepta Sororitas possibly with an Imperial Knight for heavy support.

And of course the Poxwalkers and Lords of Contagion are to add to the Death Guard army I have.

What I am Modelling

Its not been the most productive week, I have been of a low mood, so I didn’t even go near my painting desk for a few days, but I did get some stuff done.
The first thing were the Galvancic Servohaulers that I got with Warhammer 40,000 Conquest. These were done with Contrast Paint to get the red effect on the body, I am still figuring out how best to use these paints, but I think this worked out ok.

Then I finished off the Hetaeron Guard for the Legio Custodes which will serve as Wardens in 40k. I did seven of them, five armed with Custodian Spears, one with a Pyrithite Spear and one with an Adrasite Spear.

And finally I finished up a squad of Death Korps of Krieg Infranty, which is made up of a mixture of Advancing Infantrymen and Firing Infantrymen.

What I am Reading

Only three short stories read this week, I finished The Flesh Tithe by Miles A Drake, which I thought was a wonderful story with a nice little twist at the end.

Then I read Soulfuel by Rob Sanders which was a good little read, and very fast paced, fitting a lot into so few words, not my favourite story of what I have been reading so far, but still good.

And last night I read Signal to Noise by CZ Dunn which I enjoyed a lot, it was a really good story with a cool link back to the Heresy and an interesting look at the Orders Dialogus of the Adepta Sororitas.

I am going to continue reading the stories of the Adepta Sororitas over the next few weeks, which I have been really enjoying a lot, because I want inspiration for my Sisters of Battle.

What I am Playing

On Thurdsay night we played a couple of games of Tsuro: Phoenix Rising and Megan won both of these quite easily and then on Friday night, me and Lindsay played a game of Patchwork which she easily won.

What I am Backing

Nowt at the moment, still waiting on Car Wars Sixth Edition to launch.

But Tsuro: Phoenix Rising arrived, which was a surprise as I really wasn’t expecting it until much later on because the fulfilment partner are usually not that great at getting stuff out quickly.

I am expecting on Monday to get three projects from Steve Jackson Games, Three Mini Expansions for Munchkin, Ogre Battlefields, and Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 2.

What I am Cooking

Does a Pot Noodle count, cause that’s all I have managed

What I am Spending

Not a lot, but I did manage to buy a Khorne Christmas jumper form Merchoid.

Painting Plan For The Next Few Weeks

I am headed down to Warhammer World on the 14th November to play Megan and I have set myself the challenge of taking some Death a Guard instead of my usual Adeptus Mechanicus.

Here is the list I am going to take, I think.

  • Infantry Squad x 10
  • Infantry Squad x 10
  • Commissar x 2
  • Command HQ Squad
  • Lascannon Team x 3

Now I am away from home for 13 out of 32 days, so that’s a lot of time eaten up, but for 7 of those days I will be taking a hobby box with me, so I can work on a couple of bits whilst I am away, probably the DKK Infantry Squads and the Plague Marines.

But this is my plan for the next couple of weeks, so here is hoping I can stick to it!
