The Early War Germans Are Coming Along Nicely, But An Arms Race Has Begun

At the start of the year, one of my hobby goals was to develop my early war Germans for Bolt Action to a nice point where I had a nice collection that allowed me to play a variety of game play styles.

And I am getting closer and closer to that and I think I am basically at the point where the final plan is is place.

The above embedded Google Doc is what I have currently and my current development plans.

The army is supposed to cover 1939-1942, going from the Bzura, to the Meuse and then the Volga.

I think my plans work and will cover up to late 1942, very early 1943 meaning I may, may add a Tiger Ausf H to this list.

I am really enjoying working on this army but realistically with Graham and the other guys playing mostly late war stuff, I am gonna have to develop a later war army, probably sticking with Germans.

But I really want to explore more early war, so I can see myself expanding the French to 1250pts and perhaps some BEF.

I really wanted my next project to be Afrika Korps, but my most regular opponent is Graham and he has gone with a late war British list, and to be fair a lot of players, play late war.

This leaves me at a significant disadvantage with the early war army, so I am having to pivot to building a later war force to stand a chance in these games.

The difference in what you can take in the early war, and what you can take in later war is just unreal.

The above YouTube short demonstrates this issue for me, although the Centurion came into service just after the end of the war, you get my meaning, I hope!

So whilst I have Panzer Is and maybe a Panzer III Ausf H, Graham is rocking in with a Churchill, Sherman Firefly, Matilda II and a Cromwell in his arsenal, and that’s just not something I will be able to easily deal with.

So I have some Fallschirmjäger STLs from RKX and Colonel Muller, and I am gonna get some of them printed off, alongside a few vehicles.

I already have a Stug III, Luchs and Sd. Kfz 222 painted up for it, thinking of adding a Panzer IV Ausf H, Panther and Sd. Kfz 234/2.

But yeah, it is what it is, and next time I have some resin I will start printing them!

What I Am Modelling

I started out with a test model for an English themed New Antioch army

And a French WWII test model

After that I came to WWII French and finished off this Infantry Squad

I rebased some of my Orks to match the new base sizes from Armageddon

Then I painted a Command Squad for the Cadians

Alongside the Cadia Unbroken Castellan

Plus Ursula Creed

Following this I finished off a Warwolf to replace the one I broke

And a Leman Russ Battletank

And finally a Panzer III Ausf H

I also finished off some weapons for my Deff Dreads and Killa-Kanz

And fixed the Stahlhelms of the riders of this Opel Blitz, they were painted dark green when they really should be dunklegrau!

After that I painted up an Araknae Quad Accelerator Platform for the Ultramarines

And finally for this post, a pair of PAK 38s for the Germans, takes them to Operation Barbarossa

These particular models are form the Empire of Iron and Rust Kickstarter by Studio Historica

This one is a bit different, but I needed a 107mm x 105mm oval base for a Flak 36 for my Germans, but there was no STL for a plain one in the style of Warlord Games, so I kinda modelled it myself.

Its not going to be the start of a career in 3D modelling, that is not something I feel capable of, but its something, anyway you can download it yourself on Cult3D

So what’s up next?

  1. Blood Angels Landspeeders
  2. Ultramarines Saturnine Terminators x 6
  3. Neophyte Hybrids x 10, Primus & Magus x 2
  4. Rat Ogres x 3
  5. Deffkoptas x 3 & Kustom Boosta-Blasta

  7. Grundstock Thunderers x 5 & Torrk Lennsen
  8. Ultramarines Saturnine Command Squad x 3
  9. Einhyr Heathguard x 5
  10. Skywardens x 3

What I Am Reading

I finally, finally finished Dropsite Massacre by John French, I dunno why the headaches keep coming back, but it is what it is, I enjoyed it, but it did feel, I dunno, not rushed, but there wasn’t a lot of the betrayal in there which was a bit disappointing, but it’s a solid addition to the series.

I listened to Armageddon: Season of Fire by Jude Reid which was very good and a very good concept, I strongly recommend people give it a read, compared to the last new edition launch novel, this was a big improvement.

After that I listened to Memory Lane by Eddie Robson, which was a good concept, but it didn’t quite hit the landing, but a good listen.

Then I hit Butchers Nails by Aaron Denali-Bowden, an audio drama I have listened to before, but a long time ago when it first came out, and it was still really good. I miss Black Library audio dramas 🙁

I am now listening to Genefather by Guy Haley, and am about to start on Traitor General by Dan Abnett

I also got Kavita working when it comes to sending book via email to my Kindle, which is handy as hell, no more having to go upstairs, and as long as I am sensible and make sure to keep Kavita up to date with my books, it will work

What Tabletop Games I Am Playing

I played Brian in my first game of 11th Edition and it was a massacre!

What I Am Creating

A new episode of Edge of Empire is in editing, and in the meantime here is a video about my Bolt Action Escalation League 750pts List

What I Am Backing

The Heavy Transporters of WW2 (Volume 2) delivered, and I have already printed out a Hippo for Graham, cause trucks in Bolt Action are cool

Prelude to fear: Early WW2 armed civilians, has delivered a few bits

The Blessed Militia of the Martyred Saints has successfully funded and I have paid for that, looks like a really interesting set of minis for either Trench Pilgrims or New Antioch

Paintpal Studio XP successfully funded, I have the other STLs, and this made sense, one day I will actually get round to printing some of it to better store my paints

The Epic Sector – Frontline Project funded, I really want to play some Legions Imperialis, but it needs terrain, I already have the other two Epic Sector projects, so again it’s a one day I will get round to it!

To give me some more options for British Airborne, I backed both Join or Die Airborne Volume 2 and Merville Battery, with the first one also giving me some Folgore

For some reason, I really fancy the idea of painting some Joseon Koreans, so I have backed the Imjin War Koreans: Part 1 project

I have backed STL Printable Terrain WW2 Desert Collection Vol 2 to go with the stuff for the first one, so eventually I can create a North Africa terrain box

Cause I need more scenery still, I am backing WoWBuildings Does Bastogne

I am backing the Pirate Borg minis project because they look cool and it might be the RPG I run for the group!

The MakerPlot 2.0 looks like it might be an interesting project, so I have backed that

Motorcycle troops in Bolt Actions seem interesting, so I have backed WW2 Motorcycles & Riders: Volume 1

How could I not be backing Victoria Miniatures Grimdark Empire project???

And finally I am backing No Man’s Land: War Train, cause who does’t love an Armoured Train for Trench Crusade

What I Am Spending

I bought a Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour!

I bought myself Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and United Penguin Kingdom

11th Is Here

On Friday night we had a midnight release for Warhammer 40,000 Armageddon!

I have played more of 10th edition than I ever did 9th or even 8th, maybe not as much as 7th.

That said, 10th has been my least favourite edition of the game, simply because it feels like the Editon in which I have struggled most to get a win, and there were way too many gotcha moments.

11th looks to be on the one hand more of the same, but at the same time, things like unit coherency meaning a unit must be in 9” of each other is very useful as it stops the Poxwalker conga line, which is just so frustrating.

I still feel like the rules overly cater to the competitive scene and casual narrative players get very little, but let’s see how it develops.

I do hope when the new Space Marine codex drops they lose Oath of Moment cause that’s just way too powerful when combined with some of the detachments.

But let’s see how it does.

Paint-A-Thon

My annual Paint-A-Thon returns after a one year hiatus, and I am going to paint the Space Marines Combat Patrol from Armageddon over tow 12 hour sittings on the weekend of 26th and 27th July, I am hoping to raise £150 for the Willow Foundation, in memory of one of my closest friends, Lee Dunford.

Someone has challenged me to change it up and make it a 24 hour Play-A-Thon and have me play as many games of whatever system or even several in 24 hours, but that’s something I would need to sit down figure out and find a suitable venue, but it’s a possibility at some point.

Anyway, you can donate here!

What I Am Modelling

I started the week with some French for Bolt Action, first up an Anti-Tank Rifle Team, armed with Boys Anti-Tank Rifles

Followed by a MMG Team, armed with a Hotchkiss Machine Gun

Then it was a Centurion in Saturnine Terminator Armour for my Ultramarines

And a Chorister for the Heretic Legions of Trench Crusade

And a French Brandt Mortar Team

I did want to paint an infantry squad for the French but I ran out of a couple of main colours I am using for them so that’s gonna wait until I can restock them next week

After that I painted up a Sd. kfz 222 in late war dunkelgelb

Followed by a second Opel Blitz for the early war Germans

And some Vanquishers for the Stormcast Eternals, which for now means I have no more of them to paint

After that I painted a Daemon Prince for the True Sons

So what’s coming up next

  1. Blood Angels Landspeeders
  2. Cadian Command Squad x 5 & Castellan
  3. Ultramarines Saturnine Terminators x 6
  4. Neophyte Hybrids x 10, Primus & Magus x 2
  5. Rat Ogres x 3
  6. Deffkoptas x 2 & Kustom Boosta-Blasta
  7. World Eaters Daemon Prince
  8. Grundstock Thunderers x 5
  9. Ultramarines Saturnine Command Squad x 3
  10. Leman Russ

What I Am Reading

I finished listening to Fist of the Imperium by Andy Clark and I have to say it seemed super familiar, not sure if I have previously read it or it’s just very samey, it was fine, not the best, but not the worst.

After that I listened to The Gathering by Jospeh Lidster, and it’s really a very awkward book, not at all that great, the plot was stretched out and the sound mix was just dreadful, kinda sad cause Tegan was great in it and the story was a disservice to her.

I then listened to Day of Ascension by Adrian Tchaikovsky which was extremely good, I mean really good, nice twist at the end which was just brilliant!

After that I listened to The Romanov Project by Niel Bushnell, and it was ok, not the best written but ok, there were a few weaknesses and it was kinda middling

What Tabletop Games I Am Playing

We had a day of Horus Heresy at Durham Raiders, and due to illness and just life my advertising of it was terrible so we only had a few people, but it was nonetheless quite fun.

On Friday myself and James had a game of 30k at 2000 points, well I was slight under as I forgot my Leman Russ tanks, but we had a good game.

Played a relic mission and my Lasriflemen could not pass an intelligence test for toffee and and thus I lost, and by a lot!

What I Am Spending

I bought a new monitor, this year I was gonna upgrade my PC platform from AM4 to AM5 and get a 7800X3D, but fucking Sam Altman the prick and the other AI bastards put paid to that.

Literally the only upgrade I could really do was to my monitor, and I got this one on an Amazon Warehouse deal for £310 which is so much better than I could have hoped for.

Originally I was looking at a decent Alienware one, but the cost of this on the deal plus a new monitor arm came in quite a bit cheaper!

Also got Megan a new monitor arm too as she inherited my old main monitor and now is enjoying my old CPU, GPU and Monitor now!

Humble Choice also happened and I got this out of it

I also bought

UK Games Expo 2026

Wow, that was a very very very busy weekend!

Myself, Lindsay and Megan all volunteered to help run the UK Games Expo this year, it’s 20th year and I have been attending for 16 of them!

We headed down on the Thursday morning to get our t-shirts, groats and passes, after which we chilled out in the hotel with a pizza.

We then had shifts for the next three days, Lindsay and Megan were on the Crew Room, which was basically covering stuff all over the place, I spent time in a Shop & Drop, Hall 4 and the Crew Room.

My favourite part, someone arriving 3 minutes before entries for the painting completion closed on Sunday, his train had been massively delayed, and he had yet to collect his ticket, so I got to escort him to get his entry in before sending him to get his tickets, just trying to be helpful.

It was exhausting but an awful lot of fun, and I am so glad I was able to be there for it, to be honest if I wasn’t volunteering I couldn’t afford to be there for more than a day.

But there is something so special about not only being at an event, but also being able to help make the event happen for other people.

What I Am Spending At Expo

I picked up a new TT Combat cutting mat, that’s something I buy every year as it’s super useful

From The Army Painter I got a Drybrush and some of the John Blanche paints, Heavy Metal, Grim Rust, Grimdark Shadow and Voodoo Shade

I got a new bottle of Feldgrau and some US Dark Green from Vallejo

From Games Workshop I got the event exclusives, Cadia Stands and Dawner’s Reward

I got the standard merch of a t-shirt and event pin

Plus a few more bits from The Army Painter, Warhammer and AK Interactive for painting, those being a Scrubby Cup, Emperor Gold, Khorne Red, Tyran Blue and a Gold Playmarker Pen from AK Interactive

I did get a couple of games, staring with Machu Pichu, a fun little party game

And The Lord of the Rings Duel for Middle Earth

What I Am Modelling

I started off by painting a few bits for Trench Crusade

An Observer mercenary, which is a really cool little model

A couple of Red Brigade Yeomen armed with Flamethrowers

A Heretic Legion Trooper armed with a Flamethrower

A Sin-Eater

A trio of Heretic Priests

A couple of Anointed, one armed with a Flamethrower, the other with a Greataxe

And the obligatory Artillery Witch

For the early war French I painted a couple of Renault FTs

I also painted some Legionaries for my True Sons Chaos Space Marines Warband

So what’s up next week?

  1. Blood Angels Landspeeder
  2. True Sons Daemon Prince
  3. Cadian Command Squad x 5
  4. Ultramarines Saturnine Terminators x 6
  5. Neophyte Hybrids x 10, Primus & Magus x 2
  6. Vanquishers x 10
  7. Sd. Kfz 222 (Late War)
  8. Rat Ogres x 3
  9. Deffkoptas x 3 & Kutom Boosta-Blasta
  10. World Eaters Daemon Prince

What Tabletop Games I Am Playing

I played two games of Bolt Action this week, first on Wednesday when I took on Gavin and his Battle of the Bulge themed British

My 750pts list is now

Rifle Platoon

Oberleutnant (Regular)

Heer x 8, LMG, NCO with SMG (Regular)
Heer x 8, LMG, NCO with SMG (Regular)
Heer x 8, LMG, NCO with SMG (Regular)

Sniper Team (Veteran)

Light Mortar Team (Regular)

Armoured Platoon

Panzer II Ausf C

Panzer I Ausf A

Panzer 38 (t)

The game was pretty hard, he had a Sherman and a Wolverine, the latter of which took out my Panzer 38 (t) on the first turn.

We played the Breakthrough mission and it was a classic game where it came down to three dice rolls

The game was a draw but had I passed at least one of two morale tests, I would have won, and had the game gone to turn 6, he potentially would have won!

Then on Friday I played David and his Australians, an army I have never played before, we again played breakthrough and

David’s M3 Stuart and my Panzer 38 (t) spent most of the game pinging shots off each other

It was an impressive win for David as he made some amazing tactical decisions and had some really great dice rolls that systematically demolished my Germans

He ended up winning the game 8-2

On Sunday I was supposed to be playing in a Warhammer 40K tournament, I went but was quite unwell, and only managed one game against the kid

It was a really tough game and I lost very badly, but hopefully 11th Editon will be somewhat kinder to me

But Space Marines are a very tough army to overcome, with the Oath of Moment and the various buffs they get

On Tuesday myself and Graham had a game of Bolt Action, my early war Germans took on his British

It was a tough game, I managed to destroy all of his infantry, but I couldn’t touch his tanks, Germans during the Blitzkrieg didn’t have very good anti-tank weapons, my Pak 36 and Panzer 38 (t) were just pinging off his armour for the most part

I did manage to damage the Churchill, and reduce its movement, but the Matilda II was beyond my weapons.

What Video Games I Am Playing

I am really enjoying Over The Top, its incredible fun, and I am trying to play a bit more Darktide.

  • Crysis 3 Remastered (gifted to a nibbling)

Doubles with Megan

Bit late with this post due to illness 🙁

A couple of Sundays ago, myself and Megan played in a doubles tournament at Games-at-Hart, and it was for Megan their first time playing against someone other than me

We took this list, the rules were two armies of 1000pts so we took this list. With me playing the Guard and Megan the Blood Angels

Our first game was against a very serious pair playing Orks and Death Guard with both Mortarian and a Gorkanaught

It was a hard game and I felt I had to be a bit strict with the pair as they tried to control the game in ways that were not friendly such as picking our cards in the app for us, something which is a real faux par and extremely rude

I could not have imagined a worst game for Megan to start with and was a very much we went through the motions to just get through it

The second game was much better, sadly Megan fell ill and had to leave 🙁

But I played a Death Guard and Astra Militarium combo which was a lot of fun to play against and a decent amount of cool banter

Massive loss again but well worth it for the game

My third game was a force of Daemons of Khorne and World Eaters, a bit closer but not by much

Another excellent game and at the end we were 3 losses down, but that’s fine with me as fun was had

The event was brilliant, but there was a degree of the issue I dislike about 10th edition, and that is the problem of armies being built around the best most destructive units with the lists not resembling an army you would see in “reality”

Hopefully something that changes in 11th

What I Am Modelling

I started out with an Anointed with an Anti-Material Gun for the Heretic Legions to use in Trench Crusade

Then I painted up a Nemesis Dreadknight for the Grey Knights to finish up their Combat Patrol

After that I painted a War Wolf for the Heretic Legions, model that reminded me a lot of a rat!

This was followed by a Leman Russ Demolisher for the Solar Auxila and Astra Militarium

For the Cadians I then painted a pair of Field Ordnance Batteries with Bombast Field Guns

And for the Orks Combat Patrol, two units of 10 Boyz

And finally a unit of Word Bearers Tactical Marines

https://www.instagram.com/p/DWVK5RCiJR1/?igsh=dnd3cG1mZXBkMDlu

And an Apothecary as well

https://www.instagram.com/p/DWVLQeLCIpZ/?igsh=MTRvZ21ydWZ6NTB3cw==

I painted up a second Hellhound for the Guard

https://www.instagram.com/p/DWiAJhciKs3IB1aN6xCvLB38Mrg8gMF-972cWA0/?igsh=MWo1cjNmZnZta29kcg==

Then rebased a few Orks to modern base sizes

https://www.instagram.com/p/DWiDTipiCL-DvhAhy1qyHcgo1-79d8VR4k188A0/?igsh=MWt4bGIyNWRzNTh2OA==

Plus a Panzer 38 (t) for my early war Germans

https://www.instagram.com/p/DWmBSWgiPAGLP57MgqactNgCeTwjLQGT3EFGCs0/?igsh=d2IweHFnNjh1NXFj

And a SD.Kfz 222

https://www.instagram.com/p/DWmBppWiBkPH_HBlrM8NCY8gKQbTJP63sah4Uo0/?igsh=bjJjaWgybHF4OHBy

I also painted a Warsmith for the Iron Warriors, but he was really a bit too grimy!

I then painted a couple of models for the Skaven from Spearhead, a Warlock Engineer

And a Grey Seer

And a couple of units of Howling Banshees for the Aeldari

As well as Zodgrod Wortsnagga for the Orks

And a couple of random Grots I found half painted in the Orks box!

So what’s up next?

  1. Blood Angels Landspeeders
  2. Heretic Legion Warband
  3. Black Templar Intercessor Squad x 5 & Marshall
  4. Hearthkyn Warriors x 10
  5. Acolyte Hybrids x 5 & Acolyte Iconward
  6. Death Korps Squad x 10
  7. Cadian Shock Troopers x 20
  8. Chaos Legionaries x 10
  9. Combat Engineers x 10
  10. Brôkhyr Thunderkyn x 3

What I Am Reading

I finished Soul Music by Terry Pratchett, which was very very good, but I have been displeased to hear that weirdly some schools have been banning it.

I then listened to Vainglorious by Sandy Mitchell, sad to have have finished the main series of Cain books.

Then I listened to Death Rider by Rhuairidh James which was really good, just as good as his previous shorts which are also really good.

After that it was The Nowhere Place by Nicholas Briggs which was a good idea, but badly executed.

Following that I listened to The Devil You Know by Sandy Mitchell which was a great deal of fun to listen to again.

And then it was Dead in the Water by Sandy Mitchell, again another great audio drama.

Currently I am listening the Ciaphas Cain: The Anthology by Sandy Mitchell, which I am rather enjoying

Of course he absolutely whipped my arse, but what else do you expect with Solar Auxilia

Was a great game and we met up with Dave and Chris there

For the evening we had a lovely kebab and a night of Cards Against Humanity, which was a lot of fun, and lead to a lot of laughs

The next day we returned to Warhammer World where I teamed up with Dave and his Dark Angels to play against Adam’s Death Guard

I took this 1500 points list

Crusade Primary Detachment

Legatine Command Section x 5

- Legate Marshall, Volkite serpenta, Power sword

Adam has a reputation as an extremely good player, and I found it to be a well earned reputation!

My army was mostly wiped out in turn 2, and at the end of the game, all of Dave’s Dark Angels had been destroyed, and all I had left were ten Lasriflemen, a Line Command Squad and a Legatine Command Squad who were hiding to maintain that LD10 with the Vox Interlinks

I ended up taking a nap in the car after the game cause I was utterly shattered, whilst the others played some more

After we arrived back at the AirBnB, we had a Chinese and played some Dungeons and Dragons together for the first time in person after 3 years of playing together

It’s was a lot of fun, but by midnight we were all utterly shattered and had to go to bed!

The next day after a McDonalds breakfast we headed back to Warhammer World where we did a tour of the Hall of Miniatures, which has changed a lot since last time I was there, I failed to find the Assassin yet again!

And then myself and the Mills brothers had a doubles games of 4k a side, in which I took this list for my 2K

Myself and Graham got a commanding lead as my Lasriflemen seized the objectives early on for the highest points.

We only got to turn 3 but it was a lot of fun nonetheless

What I Am Modelling

I had a busy and productive week!

I started off the week by finishing an Opel Blitz for my early war Germans

And then for my future late war Germans, a Sturmgeschütz III, one that Graham bought me last year!

I also painted some Heretic Troopers for the Trench. Crusade Heretic Legions

Used a painting scheme influenced by WWII Germany simply because they were as evil a group that ever existed.

And a Heretic General

After that I finished up painting 20 Tech Thralls for my Mechanicum

These models were 3D printed and I much prefer them to the plastic ones

I was also able to paint up a couple of Astra Militarium characters, yet another Commissar

And a Primaris Psyker

After that I painted up some Hearhtkyn Pioneers for the Leagues of Votann, which completed that Combat Patrol

So what’s up next?

  1. Blood Angels Land Speeders
  2. Heretic Legion Warband
  3. True Sons Havocs x 10
  4. Einhyr Hearthguard x 5
  5. Guardians Defenders x 11
  6. Myrmidon Destructors x 6
  7. Nemesis Dreadknight
  8. Death Riders x 5
  9. Howling Banshees x 10
  10. Ork Boyz x 20

What I Am Reading

I finished listening to Angron: The Red Angel by David Guymer which was ok, but felt a bit of a let down as Angron barely featured at all. Lots of good concepts but also so much missed potential.

After that I listened to Something Inside by Trevor Baxendale, which was ok, but the 8th Doctor getting amnesia is kind getting a bit dull now, I am Paul McGann can really act that very well, but it’s just too used

What Video Games I Am Playing

Not played that much which is disappointing but will try better next week!

What Achievements I Have Unlocked

Hell Let Loose (Steam)

Breaking the Geneva Convention

Kill an enemy medic while he is reviving someone.
16/02/2026
Death From Below

Destroy a vehicle with an AT mine

What I Am Backing

The From Mesue to Volga, 1940-1942 project successfully funded and I should get the files sometime in March

Lindsay also backed the Cube Mod Carrier project by Txarli for me, I mentioned it looked cool, and couldn’t afford it and she backed it for me to pay her back later

What I Am Spending

At Warhammer World I bought myself a Leman Russ Strike Tank, some glue, another three painting handles and some pots of paint..

The tank is going to be built as a Demolisher, cause I like Demolisher cannons and they have proven quite useful in both 40K and 30k.

As for the painting handles, well I have a fair few of them already, but I want to get to 25 cause I am far too regularly painting 25 models at a time, this one gives me 24

I grabbed the latest issue of Combat Patrol to hopefully add a couple more Field Ordnance Batteries to the Astra Militarium

It was also Humble Choice week,- that bagged me

An Upgrade To The A1

With it being the Black Friday sale on Bambu Labs, Megan and Lindsay decided to pay for an upgrade to the printer with an AMS Lite.

The AMS Lite is a system that allows the A1 to print with up to 4 different reels of filament, so this can be either the same filament so you don’t need to reload when you run out, or four different colours for multi-colour printing.

Given the space constraints, we opted to mount it above the printer, which meant I had to first print the materials for that. I do find it cool that instead of selling you the top mount with moulded plastics, they just sell you the screws and give you the STL to print it yourself, we opted for white to match the printers overall look

The AMS arrived on Thursday, we also ordered a cool plate for better adhesion when printing PLA, which is the material we most commonly print with, and a stick of glue to give that a try.

But alas that package was delayed until Friday, one of the few times DPD has delivered a parcel later than promised to us.

So we set it up temporarily next to the printer

The Cool Plate and glue are pretty decent, so that should help with some adhesion issues we occasionally have

Paul took advantage of our order and got a new hot end and a textured plate in the order to save on postage costs for him

My first real test of the AMS was something for the Christmas box that I cannot show off, yet

The screws eventually arrived

So we were able to get the AMS top mounted at last and the machine now looks the part

Also printed off a few other upgrades for it as well

What I Am Modelling

I started out by painting a Command Section for the Solar Auxilia, which as per usual contains an extra Legate Marshall

Then I painted Terminator Librarian of the Grey Knights for Combat Patrol

And some Brotherhood Terminators to accompany him

And I followed that up squad of Death Korps of Krieg Lascannon Heavy Weapons Teams

After that I painted up a squad of Eradicators to add to the Dark Angels

I then did some work on some more members of the Red Brigade

Starting with the most important unit of the army, a Trench Dog

Followed by a couple of models I will be using as Lieutenants

Then a Shocktrooper

And a Combat Medic

A Sniper Priest

And Sniper Prioress

And finally three Yeomen

And finally for now, I rebased my Tempestus Scions to merge together my two Astra Militarium armies

Until now I have had a Krieg force and a Scions force both with a different basing scheme, but now I have merged the armies together and the Scions basing has been changed to match the Krieg

So what’s up next!

  1. Blood Angels Landspeeders
  2. Heretic Legion Warband
  3. Imperial Fists Macharius
  4. Ardboyz x 10
  5. Tzzangors x 20
  6. Guardian Defenders x 10
  7. Lord Vigilant on Gryph-Stalker
  8. Endrinmaster with Dirigible Suit
  9. Imperial Fists Veteran Breachers x 10
  10. Hearthkyn Warriors x 10

What I Am Reading

I finished Death or Glory by Sandy Mitchell which was incredible and then I listened to Duty Calls as an immediate follow up which is also incredible

After that I listened to Night Thoughts by Edward Young, which was very creepy

I also read Gorechosen by Andy Clark and The Eighth Victory by Grahame Lyon both of which were great little reads

What I Am Cooking

I am cooking Christmas dinner this year, but alas the family are uncertain as to my proposed menu

So we had to trot up to my sisters in law to prepare the dishes for people to try on a Sunday dinner

I am making garlic roast potatoes (been asked to change these to bigger potatoes from my preferred new potatoes), spiced roast carrot, parsnip, onion and leeks, honey glazed red cabbage (normally I would add sultanas but the family hate them, to be fair so do I), and buttered sprouts with chestnuts and almonds

Thankfully it all went down a treat, although I am being strong-armed into serving broccoli and Yorkshire Puddings !

What I Am Spending

I picked up this pot of Vallejo Thick Mud European Mud to try and replace Stirland Battlemire/Mud, it’s not a great match.

But with a coat of Brigadene Brown it will pass

Will still need Stirland Mud for tank treads however for the Astra Militarium

I managed to get hold of a copy of issue 60 of Combat Patrol for some

And to add to my video games library, I bought a Humble Bundle to aid the Trevor Project that got me Life is Strange Remastered and Life is Strange: Before the Storm Remastered

I also bought What Remains of Edith Finch, cause it’s a great little game!

It was Humble Choice this week and that got me

Finding the Fun Again

As Warhammer: Age of Sigmar turns ten, I’ve been reflecting on how much the game has changed. and, more importantly, how much my relationship with it has changed. Somewhere along the way, the joy I used to feel slipped out of reach. I still love the models, I still love the worlds, but playing? That’s another story. And honestly, I don’t want it to stay that way. I want to find the fun again.

I was there on day one. I tried the new rules, I liked the look of the Stormcast Eternals (even if they did get called “Sigmarines” by everyone on the internet), and I stuck with it. The early days were rough, no points, no balance, just arguments about how to make a fair game. It really was the Wild West, and plenty of people hated it. They hated the death of the Old World, they hated the move to high fantasy, they said it looked like a game for kids.

But I kept going. And when the General’s Handbook finally landed, it clicked. Suddenly the game worked. By Second Edition, I was all in. Endless Spells were amazing fun, the Sacrosanct Chamber gave me my favourite models, and the Nighthaunt were some of the best villains we’d seen in Warhammer. Add in writers like Josh Reynolds, and the Mortal Realms felt alive and fresh. That was peak Age of Sigmar for me.

Then came Third Edition. The new Thunderstrike Stormcast were… fine, but they didn’t excite me like the chunky Liberators and Sequitors had. More than that, the whole tone of the game seemed to shift. Competitive play had always been there, but now it felt like the focus. And by Fourth Edition, things just broke for me. My beloved Sacrosanct models — not even six years old — were squatted. Yes, the Stormcast range was bloated, but wiping away entire playstyles in one go? That stung.

I’ll admit it: I was bitter. Very bitter. I didn’t buy the new starter box, shoved my Stormcast into storage, and picked up Greenskins instead. I joined an escalation league, but even then, the magic wasn’t there. The narrative side of the game had all but vanished, terrain felt like a box-ticking exercise, and every match seemed to orbit around the latest “meta” list. I wasn’t showing up to play anymore, I was showing up to hang out with friends, with the games themselves feeling like chores I had to get through before the actual fun started.

The return of Chaos Dwarves should have set my heart racing, after all, they were my very first army in any system, my first love in the hobby. The models themselves are incredible, beautifully sculpted, and exactly the kind of army that should make me excited to get painting and building. And yet… the thought of playing them in the current version of Age of Sigmar just turns me off. It’s not the models; it’s the game around them. The overly competitive focus, the meta-driven play, the lack of narrative feel, all of it saps the excitement I should feel for something so personal. It reminded me that no matter how much I love an army, if the game around it isn’t fun, the joy doesn’t follow and that’s something I need to fix for myself.

And part of that’s on me. Since my brain injury, I can’t hold rules in my head the way I used to. I was sharp once, but now I forget things, I get muddled, and honestly? I lose a lot. I’m used to that. But when the whole culture around the game feels like it’s built for hyper-competitive play, it leaves me feeling like there’s no space for someone like me who just wants to throw dice and tell a story.

But here’s the thing: I don’t actually want to give up. I still love the models. I still get excited when I see a new sculpt, even if I can’t muster the will to buy it. And deep down, I still want to enjoy the game. I just need to change how I approach it.

So here’s my new plan: stop chasing the meta. Stop pretending I care about tournaments. Stop playing like winning matters. Instead, I’m going to lean into the stuff that actually makes me smile. If that means turning up with a weird, suboptimal list, great! If it catches my opponent off guard, even better. And who knows? Sometimes those “bad” lists surprise people, and suddenly you’ve not only given your opponent a more memorable game, but you might even scrape an unexpected win.

That’s the kind of joy I want back. Games where my Orks run around being loud, messy, and hilarious. Games where my Knights crash into things just because it looks cool on the table. Boards that look like real places with varied terrain, even if it’s not ITC compliant. I’ve got 17 boxes of terrain that the competitive crowd says are useless, but they’re going on my tables anyway. I want battlefields that tell stories, not perfectly symmetrical chessboards where people measure gaps for half an hour before rolling a single dice.

I need to play more Heresy, it’s the game I love most. I’ve seen how stepping back from the competitive grind can change the experience. Take Graham, for example. He was once the most cutthroat, WAAC-focused player I knew locally. But since he started playing Heresy more for fun, he’s mellowed out. He still likes to win, of course, but he’s way more relaxed and chill these days. Watching him enjoy the game without stressing about the meta has reminded me that maybe I can do the same, that the joy of gaming doesn’t have to come from trophies or “perfect” play, but from simply loving the game itself.

And maybe I’ll spread my wings a bit more. Try Trench Crusade. Dip into The Old World if I can decide on an army. Play some historical with Bolt Action and maybe even some Napolionics. Explore games that don’t have the same competitive baggage, where the focus is back on narrative, creativity, and having a laugh.

At the end of the day, I don’t care about trophies or titles. I don’t care if I’m not “keeping up.” What I care about is fun. I want opponents who smile when they see my army, not because they think it’ll be an easy win, but because they know it’s going to be a fun game. That’s the whole point of this hobby.

Because let’s be honest: most of us got into this for joy. For the excitement of a new box of plastic, for the thrill of rolling that clutch dice, for the stories we tell after the game’s over. Somewhere along the line, I lost sight of that. But I’m ready to start looking for it again.

And that’s why I’ve started drafting my own little manifesto for fun gaming: a set of rules to keep myself honest and make sure the hobby stays joyful, for me and for anyone I play with.

My Manifesto for Fun Gaming

  1. Play what I love: If I like the model, the lore, or the look, it belongs in my army, meta can go to hell.
  2. Every list needs a curveball: At least one “weird” choice that isn’t optimal but makes me smile, and might just surprise my opponent.
  3. Paint at my pace: If a model sits on my desk for two months, that’s fine. This isn’t a race, it’s a hobby.
  4. Terrain should tell stories: Symmetry is for chessboards. I want tables that look like real places worth fighting over.
  5. Winning is optional, fun is mandatory: A memorable story beats a victory every single time.
  6. Celebrate the silly moments: A goblin felling a gargant with a lucky stab should be cheered louder than a finely-tuned combo working as intended.
  7. Make the game fun for my opponent: If they walk away smiling, it was a success, win or lose.
  8. Keep exploring: Try new games, new armies, or new scenarios if they spark excitement. Stagnation kills joy.
  9. No guilt, no grind: If I’m not enjoying it, I step back, take a breather, and come back when the spark’s there.
  10. Remember why I started: Dice, stories, friends, and toy soldiers. Everything else is optional.

What I Am Modelling

I started out the week by painting this Knight-Draconis, with the scheme of a Blue-Eyes white Dragon which my sister in law, Jane will get a kick out of

After that I finished up this Griffin from the BattleTech Beginners Box for the Federated Suns

For the Red Brigade I painted a Yeoman

A Trench Cleric

And a Trench Dog

I also cracked on with these Armiger Helverins for my House Taranis force

So what’s up next?

  1. Blood Angels Land Speeders
  2. Stormdrake Guard x 4
  3. Blood Angels Intercessors x 5
  4. Ultramarines Tactical Squad x 10
  5. Myari’s Purifiers
  6. Tempestus Aquilons x 11
  7. Red Brigade Warband
  8. Ork Warboss in Mega Armour
  9. Death Korps of Krieg Engineers x 6
  10. Dark Angels Firestrike Servo Turrets x 2

What I Am Reading

I finished The Silent King by Guy Haley, that was a lot of fun and wove together a lot of the novels published since 8th Edition, bringing together the Pariah Nexus and Dark Imperium stuff along with a few other bits I have yet to read

Its a shame the Dawn of Fire series has ended, if they had all been as good as that book, it would have been amazing!

I am now listening to Singularity by James Swallow, only about a quarter of the way through but so far, so good!

Also made some great progress with Era of Ruin as well, and should finish that in the next day or two, on the last story now!

What Tabletop Games I Am Playing

Myself and Megan played Unlock! Game Adventures and went through the Mysterium pack, and that was fine, a little confusing at times however.

I also played a game of Heresy with Graham, and weirdly I won!

But later on we realised that Graham remembered his Comptroller rule, he would have won by 1 point instead of me winning by 3!

What I Am Spending

I bought myself a paint top up, so glad Gamers-At-Hart are now selling Fanatic paints

I also picked up Liber Astartes, and a third Dracosan for the Solar Auxilia

In terms of video games, I did buy The Expanse: A Telltale Series, Silver Box Classics and Gimmick! Special Edition

Whoop A 9070XT

My RTX 3070 has bee. Great apart form one issue, VRAM, 8GB didn’t cut it and in too many games it proved to be an issue

I had planned on upgrading when the 60 series came out but struggles in games like Darktide and Cyberpunk 2077 convinced to upgrade early.

And for the first time in a very long time, I went for a Radeon card, specifically the 9070XT, the Acer Predator Bifrost 9070XT OC!!!

The card is beautiful and looks amazing in my PC and performs like a dream, especially in games where the devs have added FSR 3 and above.

My performances in Cyberpunk 2077 has gone up a hell of a lot, yeah some is via frame gen, but honestly, the AMD implementation of that feel fine.

I am sadly like far too many PC gamers and will upgrade my rig regardless if it needing it sometimes!

And in all honesty if the RTX 3070 wasn’t struggling with its VRAM in certain games I probably would have kept it as its performance is good, it’s just been hamstrung slightly which is annoying.

Also AV1 encoding is fantastic, and has been really good for my YouTube videos.

But that card is still going to live on in the house as Megan has had their rig upgraded from the GTX 1660Ti to the RTX 3070, which will give her some great gaming performance in the games they play, like Disney Dreamlight Valley and The Sims 4.

Meanwhile her GTX 1660Ti and the Ryzen 5 3600 that used to live in that rig, which I upgraded to a 5600X when I changed my CPU to a 5700X3D, well we have an idea for that!

What I am Modelling

I started off by painting this Command Squad for my Ultramarines in MKIII Armour, 5 guys all armed with Power Swords and Combat Shields

I already have a MKIII Banner Bearer from the old kit, so he will be hoping these where needed

I also painted up these two Heralds in MKVI Armour

After that I decided to get the Imperial Fists I have finished so that they can go into storage for a bit, and started out with an Overseer

Then a squad of Breachers

After that I turned my attention to The Red Brigade of New Antioch and painted a few figures for them starting with a Lieutenant

Then Lieutenant MacDonald

Followed by a Stormtrooper

And a Yeoman

Then I finished off this Draconis Combine Vindicator for BattleTech

So what does that leave me with to paint next

  1. Blood Angels Land Speeders
  2. Knight Draconis & Stormdrake Guard x 4
  3. Armiger Helverin x 2
  4. Blood Angels Intercessors x 5
  5. Ultramarines Tactical Squad x 10
  6. Myari’s Purifiers
  7. Tempestus Aquilions x 11
  8. Red Brigade Warband
  9. Ork Warboss in Mega Armour
  10. Death Korps of Krieg Engineers x 6

What I Am Reading

I listened to the next couple of books in the Doctor Who monthly range staring with Live 34 by James Parson which was pretty good, this was followed by Scaredy Cat by Will Shindler which was actually pretty dire.

I then started to listen to The Silent asking by Guy Haley, which is quite good, seems to be weaving together a few more recent threads from the novels of 8th and 9th editions.

I also read To Speak As One, also by Guy Haley, which was a nice little story covering some of Cawls entourage

What Tabletop Games I Am Playing

On Tuesday I played a game of 1500pts against Graham with my Solar Auxilia, using this list against his Mechanicum

We are still learning the new Editon but we are now getting to grips with it a bit better

But Grahams Tech-Thralls were a tad more resilient and less likely to panic than my Lasriflemen

Then on Friday at Gamers@Hart, me and Russell played 1500 points, I took the this list

# ++ Crusade Primary Detachment ++ [723 Point(s)]

## High Command [135 Point(s)]

It was a great game, but I lost, and that was down to secondaries, Russell got ahead early on, but I was able to catch up, what cost me the game was not having a balanced list to be honest, not enough Line and no Vanguard

What I Am Creating

The next videos in the Heresy series went up, those being Ultramarines and Death Guard, two legions I have been collecting for a long time as well as the Thousand Sons

I also published the next episode of Edge of Empire

What I Am Spending

I bought a few games, a couple of Humble Bundles starting with this months Humble Choice that got me

And the WB Play the Legends Bundle that netted me

The rest of the games went into a second Steam account I am maintaining for whichever nibbling starts wanting to play PC games first!

And the Table Top Tag Team Bundle which got me

I also got seperatly

A New 3D Printing Journey

For a few months now we have had a list of things we want to do to improve our home infrastructure

So that’s been things like the new car, replacing the vacuum cleaner and a new home server

High on that list has been a filament 3D printer to do the things my resin one cannot, and this week, we finally got it!

We went for the ever popular and ever reliable Bambu Labs A1! Paul has the A1 Mini and raves about it, so we figured to go for the same as him.

But he has an AMS, we currently do not (long term it’s on the list)

It’s living in my studio, because the cats don’t go up there, nor will visiting children

Assembly was fine, the video helped a lot and it probably took about an hour to get from unboxing to having Benchy starting to print

We borrowed some already dried blue filament from Paul, the first thing printed, other than a benchy and a poop bin, was some replacement pegs for our Socktopus, using an STL that Lindsay found on the Bambu Handy app

We have printed a fair few things, Megan has been especially happy with the initiative tokens for DnD and this over the screen dice tower!

We also got round to printing the storage solution we have been wanting to sort out for Takenoko

We have built up a bit of a supply of different coloured filaments to use for some toys for the nibblings

It’s a really great printer, and we are really happy with it and looking forward to way it can do!

I started off with a second Heavy Mechanised Infantry for the Trench Crusade Red Brigade

I painted the Dark Disciples from the Dark Apostle that I had painted up for the Word Bearers

After that it was some scenery for my oldie world set

Then an Overseer for my Word Bearers

Followed by an Overseer for the Ultramarines

Then a Centurion for the Ultramarines

What Tabletop Games I Am Playing

I played Graham in a last hurrah for 2.0 Heresy, of course I lost as he dismantled my Fists, but it was a really fine game

Last Sunday, we hosted CJ and played a game of Unspeakable Words and Fluxx, I won Unspeakable Words and Lindsay won Fluxx

On Tuesday I had a first game of 3.0 with Graham, we got to only 3.0, and I can tell you this, it’s a hell of a lot of fun!!!

What I Am Reading

I finished CL Werner’s Lady of Sorrows as an audio book, fairly good read, one of the twists seemed really obvious, the other, not so much.

Good story and makes me want more Nighthaunt books!

What Video Games I Am Playing

Not much this past fortnight, but I have played a little Cyberpunk 2077

Myself, Chris and Graham have started a playthrough of Diablo IV, which is pretty fun.

What I Am Creating

I published the paining videos for the Night Lords, Blood Angels, Iron Hands and World Eaters this past fortnight

And a further Edge of Empire episode!

What I Am Spending

Ok, these next two I didn’t spend money on but rather was gifted, starting out with a Sicaran Venator that someone gave to Gamers-At-Hart to distribute to the community, and this one ended ok with me

And Graham was kind enough to give me this Stugg III, for my Bolt Action Germans

I did treat myself to a MKIII Command Squad for Heresy, which will join the Ultramarines

Will be making the guys inside as all Power Sword and Combat Shield guys as I have a MKIII banner guy to join them already, but will probably print off a couple of MKVI bodies to make two more Heralds/Banner Bearers

Of course I was saving up for Saturnine, and I picked it up from Gamers@Hart last Saturday

I only bought the Liber Auxilia hoping the other two books would be coming out as ePubs, but no dice on that thus far

I have bought a couple of games

It’s Ayyám-i-Há, But Not A Good One

This week has been well, crap, with family stuff happening that has prevented us from celebrating Ayyám-i-Há or Megans Birthday which really sucks.

Megan and Lindsay did get me an Elegoo Mercury Plus V3.0 to help with the 3D Printing, so gonna order 5L of IPA on Monday!

Plan is to keep my pickling jars for dirty washes and use the Mercury for the clean wash.

The first prints washed and cured are markedly better than with the old system, that’s not the say what I had was pants, but this, is so so much better!

I printed some Ogryns for my Solar Auxilia, and yeah, they are a lot smoother and easier to get clean with the new system.

Website Updates

This week the My Armies page was updated with army listings for the Necrons, Adeptus Mechanicus for 40K and Mechanicum for 30K and Knights for both.

What I Am Modelling

I started out by finishing up my Malcador Heavy Tank for the Solar Auxilia

Followed by a trio of Rockgut Troggoths for the Gloomspite Gitz

After that I moved on to the Tyranids from Combat Patrol, starting with the second lot of Termagants

Alongside a Ripper Swarm

And a Parasite of Mortrex

Then I turned my attention to some Trench Crusade and painted some Azebs for the Iron Sultanate

Alongside a Sapper

We played a Blood Feud mission and I was utterly decimated, I only managed to take out the Kytan

It was my first time paying an all tank army and it’s a bit of a learning curve and I made a fair few tactical mistakes

Let’s be perfectly honest, the Malcadors and Macharius are such a worse choice compared to the Leman Russ Vanquisher, but I hate the idea of just taking the most efficient unit

The biggest mistake I made was moving forward, what I should have done was stay back and fire from distance, and concentrate on the Contemprors with Multi-Meltas.

I also played a game of Age of Sigmar with Keith at Hartlepool Friday Night games and yeah I was tabled by end of turn 2.

His Ogor Mawtribes were very very effective and just wiped out everything I had on the table with ease!

What Video Games I Am Playing

I completed Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Dead Kings.

There are things like some Co-Op Missions etc that I still have to do, so I will probably have a few more sessions on Twitch with it.

And started on Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China

What I Am Buying

I bought the House Flipper and Friends Humble Bundle, which netted me
