Last year was a bust so let’s do better in 2026

Hobby Goals

These are ones I feel are going to be easily accomplished by trying to engage more with the community both through the podcast and my local gaming groups.

I have the past couple of months been posting every week in Friday Night Wargames of Hartlepool Gamers to ask what hobby people have been up to, and I think it’s helping with engagement in the group

So what are they gonna be!

Paint More Models

I mean pretty much self explanatory, here is the list of my models painted from last year, so let’s do a bit more and work on that pile of potential

Play More Games

Simple as that just play a bit more, try and play at least once every other week either at Durham Raiders or Hartlepool Gamers, and I really want to play some Bolt Action, and I am gonna bully Graham to play with me too, and some Trench Crusade would be good too

Focus on a Select Few Armies

I do like variety, it’s after all the spice of life, but there are a few armies I want to laser focus on and really develop, so let’s look at those

Astra Militarium

For 40K I really want to get these up and running as a full army with a decent variety of units available to me, I have a good selection of Death Korps of Krieg to work on first, and after that I want to go into the Cadians

The Combat Patrol subscription will be getting me an old Cadian Combat Patrol, and I will be grabbing some extra copies of it to bulk out the force

I also specifically want to add the following to the force

  • Chimera x 5
  • Taurox
  • Hellhound x 2
  • Scout Sentinel
  • Castellan x 2
  • Ministorum Priest

And that kinda ties in with this

Solar Auxilia

My Solar Auxilia list really worked ok in 2.0, but in 3.0 it’s got a lot of issues, and the main one is boots on the ground.

So I have as you will se below grabbed a Combat Force, and I can see me getting at least another two of them to really bulk out the force with Senitnels, Leman Russ tanks (which tie into the Astra Militarium) and Lasrifle Sections

I currently have a Stormhammer in the painting table that Graham gave me for my birthday

This is for both of the above, because I share these tanks between both forces, but I want to add another Demolisher, two Executioners and a couple of Battle Cannon tanks

I am also going to add some Basilisks too, which will be Solar Auxilia ones, cause they look cooler

Germans

I am really wanting to play Bolt Action this year, I already have a decent sized early war force, which I am planning on expanding with the following bits

  • Opal Blitz
  • Panzer I
  • Panzer II
  • Panzer III
  • Krupp Protze
  • Stug III
  • Sd.Kfz 251/1 Ausf C x 2

And u want to develop a later war army as well, for which I have already printed off a Luchs

Stormcast Eternals

I kinda want to sort out my Stormcast Eternals into a useable army, most of it is painted, up I just need to separate out the Legends stuff from the current stuff and make it into an army I can field without having to have too many proxies

Paint a Baneblade

It kinda ties in to the above for both the Solar Auxilia and Astra Militarium, it’s kinda this one model that has for years been a sort of white whale and I really want to paint one, I am kinda thinking of grabbing one for a store birthday or similar to get some freebies too

This won’t be a Shadowsword or a Hellhammer, just a plain basic Baneblade (although I will if I can do some magnetisation to allow it to change up what it is)

Stream More

I started streaming to get better at talking and thus better at the podcast, so I want to do more so I can improve my talking on Edge of Empire.

My AIO Broke!

Pretty much this, the AIO, or rather the hub that controls it, broke, so it wasn’t working at all, which sucks

So I decided to replace it with an air cooler, for which there really is only one choice, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120, for which I specifically bought the Digital version which has a screen displaying temperatures on it, simply because that was same day delivery.

I also had to get a fan hub because the AIO hub controlled all my other fans

Anyway I got the new cooler fitted and its fits ok, but alas I lost all my fans RGB due to the AIO hub having also been the RGB controller

What I Am Modelling

My first model of the year was for my Celestial Vindicators, a Lord Vigilant on Gryph-Stalker

I then finished off two units of Tzzangors to complete the Thousand Sons Combat Patrol

And a Strike Squad for the Grey Knights

Then I painted this Hellbrute for my True Sons

My Birthday

Twas my birthday this past weekend, and we had a quietish one!

On Saturday we went to Newcastle and I was able to hang out with some of my nephews and share a hot chocolate with them, whilst also popping into Warhammer for a bit of paint and for Lindsay to buy me a present, plus got the model of the month!

Sunday, we went to Megans parents, had a lovely beef dinner and some jam rolly polly!

My presents were nice, and I had a really nice weekend.

What I Am Modelling

This Captain was pulled out of a DOOMBOX and got painted up for the Blood Ravens, was a limited edition Captain, and had to be rebased onto a 32mm base as he was on a 25mm one

I printed out this Mortificator for the Word Bearers, and painted him up, to give myself a dude to prod around the dreadnoughts

And a Tactical Squad of Ultramarines I have had sitting in my pile of shame for well over a decade, they probably don’t have much of a life left in 40K, but hey, at least they got painted!

They came out of the DOOMBox and were also on 25mm bases and needed putting onto 32mm ones

Also coming out of the DOOMBox was Cypher, Lord of the Fallen

Sorry for not getting this out sooner, but its been a funny few months!

Complete 6 Combat Patrols – 50% Complete

By the skin of my teeth I completed the Chaos Space Marines Combat Patrol, but I had to do the transfers for the Havocs on the 1st July.

I did also get a few bits for the Tyranids Combat Patrol finished and built the stuff for a Custodes and T’au Combat Patrol!

Bring My Gloomspite Gitz to 2000 Point – Complete

This month we added to the Gitz, an Aleguzzler Gargant, some Sneaky Snufflers, Boingrot Bounderz and Sportplatta Fanatics!

This means I am now on 2470 points before the next edition drops!

Still to finish I have a couple of units of Squig Hoppers, some Squig Herds, a Dankhol Troggoth, Skragrott the Loonking and some Rockgut Troggoths.

Get My Drukhari To 2000 Points – 58% Complete

No progress, need to buy some more units, I have some more Helions and Reavers to paint, but that’s it right now.

This week has been much of a muchness, there isn’t much going on at all

Just waiting for WorldCon I guess and a the Heresy event

Got to get a shift on with a few things, but this week has just been meh

My depression is getting kinda bad, but I have a project of refurbing the studio to get on with

What I Am Modelling

I started out with the Blade Champion for the Custodes, who will do double duty, being in both the 40K Combat Patrol and being a Shield Captain in Heresy.

I then painted an Apothecary Biologis for the Dark Angels.

I also painted a Bladeguard Lieutenant for the Dark Angels

Plus a Deathwing Ancient

And a squad of Deathwing Terminators

Also a couple of Watchers in the Dark to join the Terminators

And then it was some Paragon Warsuits for the Sisters of Battle, all armed with Heavy Bolters.

After which I turned my attention to these Havocs for the True Sons, completing the old Chaos Space Marines Combat Patrol

I grabbed a new painting handle, I knows it’s mad, but I am trying to build these up to 21 owned in total

That would allow me to paint full units of 20, of which I do more often than I’d like, plus a HQ

I also bought a box of Allarus Custodians to complete the new Custodes Combat Patrol

To start a long awaited studio refurbishment project, I bought the first of a few paint racks we are going to need from TT Combat, this is a rack to hold 72 Citadel pots.

The plan is to have 3 of these plus a rack for 72 dropper bottles.

I also bought a 20m Cat 8 cable to route data to the server and Lindsay’s desk without creating a trip hazard!

And a MagSafe charger for my desk, to make charging my phone a lot easier

Now because this was delayed by 24 hours, Amazon gave me a £10 gift card to compensate me, it was like £8.

So I used this to buy a network switch for the studio, this will go on the end of the 20m cable and then be split into Lindsay work laptop and the server.

Hers is being fitted now, mine will be after the painting work and along side the cable management improvements.

Painting At Last

Since Insulationgate last October, at least one wall in every room of the house has needed a coat of paint.

And yeah it’s a bit depressing, due to disagreements between the insulation contractors, the landlord and the government, we decided to cut them all out and decorate ourselves.

It’s not that we couldn’t have just waited for them to sort it out, it’s more, we want to avoid massive disruption, so we are doing this ourselves at our own pace.

Megans room is the first to be done, we had to start with a mist coat, which was very runny.

That was done on the Monday, two coats overall.

The on Tuesday, we did three coats of Brilliant White, yeah it’s full, but it’s what the rest of the rooms are painted. When you rent it’s often easier to keep what the landlord had, so we don’t need to redecorate too much when we eventually move out.

It took three coats, but we got there in the end.

The next room getting done is mine and Lindsay’s bedroom and we may at the same time do the ceiling in my studio.

The studio is going to get a bit of a refurb at the same time, we are adding the 3D printer there, so taking the time to change a few things up, especially now that Lindsay works up there and I will never be using the gaming table again as a result.

So yeah that’s about it, gonna do Lindsay’s room next week, and that will be fun!

What I Am Modelling

I started off with the Von Ryan’s Leapers for the Tyranid’s Combat Patrol

All that’s needed for this one now is to finish off the Barbgaunts

Then I painted a Vindicator for the Inperial Fists

After that I started on Krondys, Son of Dracothion

I also painted up this Guardian Idol

And I have a box full of Stormcast stuff that’s never been touched, so I am thinking of painting them up as Hallowed Knights, I already have Gardus Steel Soul painted up.

So I used the Gamer Grass base I got from the UK Game Expo to paint up this test model, which I am rather happy with

I then painted a Hellbrute for the Chaos Soace Marines Combat Patrol

Followed by two units of Sporesplatta Fanatics for the Gloomspite Gitz

So what’s up next for me then?

Won a copy of Football Manager 2024 from a Twitter competition on Twitter, which is nice, especially with Euro 2024 going on!

The Colour Forge Signature Series was fully funded, so hopefully soon I will get a nice can of spray paint and some stickers and cards!

What I Am Spending

I went ahead and bought my first Legions Imperialis models that aren’t Titans or Aircraft and grabbed myself a pair of Solar Auxilia Baneblades

Decided to LI that I am gonna go heavy on the Auxilia with only small amounts of Marines in support

I got myself a bargain and bought Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection for Steam.

UK Games Expo 2024

I spent the other week at the UK Games Expo as a volunteer on IT and it was a knackering but amazing few days.

I really enjoyed it and I will absolutely being doing it again next year if they will have me, but I do have to be more realistic about my physical abilities and perhaps I need a job with more sitting down.

My journey to Birmingham was pretty bad, we got continually stuck in traffic, including being in the middle of a bunch of cars headed to a funeral that were following a marching band.

And finally the bus broke down as we left Manchester, and we had to wait over an hour for a replacement, so all in all it was a typical MegaBus journey!

I didn’t get to play many games, but the one that stood out to me was Samurai, but its long out of print, so I will be buying Pollen instead which is in print, if a little expensive.

There were a few cool things that peaked my interest, the DRPA Case and other stuff from Tabletop Tech, the amazing Colour Forge, TT Combat and their Strike Team Commander, Catalyst had Battletech which had me all nostalgic, and Gamer Grass had some amazing stuff as well.

Next year I need to take more notes to give a fuller report!

Escape from San Canciano for Carnevale

A new cutting mat, clippers, knife, tape measure plus the Fresh Corrosion and Old Rust paints

I was sold a bottle of Sir Coates Steel, as well as the Sir Coates Models from the Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy

I got some Army Painter Fanatic paints and my first Speedpaint 2.0

The Colour Forge gave me a mini Dry Brush Palette

And finally from the UK Games Expo, a Apothecary Biologis and a Bladeguard Lt for my Dark Angels!

We also pulled the trigger and paid for a Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra.

I had been set for the Saturn 4, but damn the reviews and even Megan, just were clear on how much better the Ultra was over the standard model.

So now just to wait for the postman to deliver it!

It was Humble Choice, so I bagged the following!

Not so much mine, but Lindsay did get the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bundle from Humble Bundle, which I will be reading plenty of!

Warhammer Adventures – Some Thoughts

I have been trying to write this for a couple of weeks now and I haven’t been entirely sure how to get the right tone.

But I wanted to summarise my thoughts on the now competed Warhammer Adventures series, Warped Galaxies and Realm Quest.

I have purchased all of the volumes as ePubs and some for my nephews physically, as well as purchasing them as audio books from Audible.

To be honest I was sceptical, I thought they might be Warhammer adjacent, and perhaps a bit daft.

But to my surprise, they were very much within the universes with little compromise, for example in Attack of the Necrons, we see a character utterly disintegrated by a Necron Gauss weapon.

We see Nurglings tear apart a Forge World and spread disease and pestilence, the despair caused by an army of Nighthaunt, the warpstone crazed behaviour of Skaven.

All the things that make Warhammer, well Warhammer are right here, including the grimdark.

In fact the only area I would really criticise as being out of step with the franchises, so that in the AoS books, they refer to Sigmar as simply a King, rather than as the God-King, but I suppose this was done to appease American parents, who will ban books at the drop of a hat.

The characters are all interesting, the 40K ones are ok, although I found Zelia a little too naive for the universe, but her companions are much closer to their archetypes.

The AoS characters are also good, but it does feel like there are perhaps a few too many and some of them get lost and ignored quite a lot.

The audio books are excellently narrated, David Tennent fits the books so well and does a great Grot voice.

Billie Piper is also a great narrator for the AoS books and her Skaven voice is wonderful, her replacement Helen McAlpine is also good, but doesn’t seem as approachable I guess is the right word as Billie Piper.

In conclusion I really would recommend this book for your kids, and you know what, if you want to paint and have something on in the background, these are perfect and easy to follow along with.

I hope more will come in time.

What I Am Modelling

I spent the bulk of the week working on the Chaos Space Marines that came with Imperium Premium Pack 1.

So that’s a squad of 10 Chaos Space Marines, 2 Greater Possessed and a Sorcerer to lead them.

I finished the Chaos Space Marine Squad first.

Followed by the Sorcerer.

And finally the Greater Possessed.

I then started work on the Noctolith Crown which is also going to be used in the Battle Report that these guys will see service in.

I also painted the Flayed Ones for my Necrons

After that I painted up a Technomancer for the Necrons.

I then finished up the Munitorium Armoured Container from Imperium.

I am now working on a Charnel Throne for my Flesh-Eater Courts.

What I Am Reading

I failed to pickup any books this week.

What Tabletop Games Am I Playing

I played Horus Heresy tonight against Anthony, we just payed a very causal kill everything Mission and I won 6-5.

What Video Games Am I Playing

I finished playing Assassins Creed last night and the final video will go online tonight, in the meantime here is the penultimate video!

I have had a little play on Far Cry 2, a bit of Halo Infinite and I finished What Remains of Edith Finch, but not played that many games really.

I am also playing through a bit of Doom 64 now.

What I Am Creating

We published the first episode of the year of Edge of Empire.

The next two Imperium Battle Reports got published too.

What I Am Spending

I bought a couple of movies this week, specifically Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, Eddie the Eagle and Paprika.

I also finally purchased the Far Cry 6 Season Pass given that it was on sale, which came with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

And the Charnel Throne I ordered last month finally arrived, after being out of stock for a while.

I also bought a Nintendo Switch, although I genuinely cannot remember buying this!

I also bought Revenge of the Sith on 4K Blu Ray too.
